Is a Clear Roof Marquee really right for your wedding reception?

Clear Roof Wedding Marquee

A clear roof marquee is undoubtedly one of the most visually striking options available for a wedding reception. Whether it's creating a completely transparent dining area, enhancing the effect of lighting after dark, or defining a specific space like a dance floor or reception area — clear roof panels add something genuinely special to a marquee design.

In this post, we'll walk you through the key considerations, so you can decide whether a clear roof marquee is the right choice for your wedding.

We install clear roof marquees across Herefordshire, Powys and South Wales — from intimate farm receptions in the Brecon Beacons to larger estate weddings along the Wye Valley. The advice below is based on over 20 years of installations and the questions we're asked most often by couples planning their day.

Pros and Cons of a Clear Roof Marquee

Pros

  • Maximises views from inside the marquee

  • Internal and external lighting looks incredible combined with clear roof panels

  • Can be added to specific areas as a feature or to define the overall theme

  • Gives your reception a genuine "wow" factor

Cons

  • Can become very warm at the height of summer

  • On a bright sunny day, direct light may be uncomfortable for dining guests

Do Clear Marquees Get Hot?

In direct sunlight, the area beneath clear roof panels will be noticeably warmer than shaded areas. How intense that heat is depends on the time of year and the strength of the sun on the day.

We always recommend ensuring some shaded areas within the marquee — so you get the best of both worlds. The open, light-filled feel of a clear roof alongside cooler areas where guests can be comfortable throughout the day.

Fully Clear Roof vs Partially Clear Roof Marquees

The Fully Clear Roof Marquee

When most people picture a clear roof marquee, they imagine the entire structure being transparent — roof, windows, gables — with the aim of bringing the outside in. Rolling hills in the distance, prominent trees, a country house or farm buildings as a backdrop.

A fully transparent marquee looks truly spectacular and can work extremely well in the right setting. The important thing to bear in mind is that when everything is clear, there is nowhere to hide — toilets, catering, vehicles and all the working parts of a wedding reception become visible to guests. For that reason we'd generally suggest a fully clear marquee for smaller, more intimate receptions where the amount of additional equipment is kept to a minimum.

If you do want to go fully clear, designing the layout to incorporate additional connected marquees for services is a good solution. It maintains the open feel while keeping the practicalities out of sight.

The Partially Clear Roof Marquee

The more common approach is to use clear roof panels in specific areas — creating a particular look and feel in one part of the reception while keeping other areas covered with solid white PVC.

This can define distinct zones: a clear roof over the dance floor creates a very different atmosphere to a clear roof over the dining area, for example. It also works beautifully as a panoramic window above the top table, giving the couple and their guests a view of the sky or landscape beyond.

From a practical standpoint, the combination of clear and opaque roofing allows you to direct focus — highlighting what you want guests to see while keeping services, catering and supporting structures discreetly out of view.

Key Things to Consider

Time of year and hours of sunlight

Long, bright summer days will increase the temperature beneath clear panels significantly. Air conditioning is worth considering if a large proportion of the marquee will be covered with clear roofing.

Use them with purpose

More isn't always better. Think about why you want clear roof panels and what you want them to achieve — a specific view, a lighting effect after dark, or a particular atmosphere in one area of the reception.

Glare for dining guests

Increased direct sunlight can become uncomfortable for guests sitting in one spot for an extended period — particularly during a wedding breakfast. Providing some shade is always advisable, as the weather is the one thing we can't control.

Some things don’t like the sun!

We'd advise against placing certain items in direct sunlight — a dark dance floor will absorb heat quickly, and if you've been warned about buttercream melting, keep the wedding cake in the shade.

Final Thoughts

Clear roof marquees remain one of the most popular design choices we're asked about — and for good reason. Used well, they create a genuinely memorable atmosphere that no amount of decoration can replicate.

The key is to think carefully about where they'll have the most impact, how they interact with the time of day and season, and how the layout manages the practical realities of a full wedding reception.
